Keeping Illness Out Of The Workplace

If you are keen to make sure that you are running your business as you should, an important part of that is keeping your people well, and that is actually something you might have more of a say over than you think. In fact, there are many things you can do to help ensure this. One of the ways to look at this is to try and keep illness out of the workplace as much as possible. In this post, we are going to take you through just a few ideas for how you can most effectively do this.

Have A Strict Sickness Policy

The first thing is to make sure that you have a strict sickness policy about when people should and should not come into work. For instance, if someone is showing all the signs of a nasty flu – such as fever and vomiting – then you certainly don’t want that spreading around the office, and you should ask them to stay home. Likewise for a stomach bug, or covid, or indeed anything contagious. Otherwise you could end up with everyone being sick, and that can make everything very difficult indeed!

Keep The Air Clear

There is much to be said for having clear air in the office too. If the air is contaminated, that has a way of causing and allowing illnesses to spread, and that is of course what we are trying to avoid here as best as we can. So you need to make sure that you are doing all you can to keep the air as clear as possible – and that might actually be simpler than you think. Using Merv 13 filters can be a big help, as can having lots of plants dotted around the place – and ensuring that windows are able to open easily too for better airflow.

Encourage Break Time

When people are having regular breaks, it actually helps to avoid illness, because it means that they are much less likely to get ill in the first place. When the body is run-down, conversely, that is when problems start to appear, so this is a really simple thing you can do to ensure that you are keeping your people free of sickness as best as you can. Encouraging breaks in this way is going to make a huge difference to how many people are sick and for how long, and it’s the kind of thing you shouldn’t ignore.

Cleanliness

Finally, a word on cleanliness. Illnesses are obviously going to struggle to spread in quite the same way if you are keeping the place clean, so make sure that you carry out a thorough deep cleaning every week if possible, and clean the essentials daily too. Getting the professionals in for this is the best approach to take, and encouraging people to clean up after themselves as well. That is going to mean that the workplace is much less likely to harbor and spread any illnesses that might be going around the population.
