Reapproaching your Attitude Towards Alcohol

Alcohol is very much a culturally-popular drug, and as such, it is all too easy to find you have problems with it in some form or another. If you are keen to try and improve your relationship towards alcohol, the good news is that this is perfectly possible to do in a number of ways.

In fact, reapproaching your attitude towards alcohol is something that you should always consider doing, especially if you know that it might be a little problematic for you right now.

But how can you do this? In this post, we are going to take you through some of the best approaches to re-vision your approach towards alcohol. In the process, you will hopefully uncover a better way to approach drinking in general.

Being honest with yourself

One of the main difficulties that a lot of us have with alcohol is that we struggle to maintain a strong degree of honesty regarding our drinking. If you think that you could probably improve your honesty levels here, then doing so is definitely in your best interests.

Being more honest with yourself around alcohol will make it easier to drink less, and will give you a chance to figure out exactly how bad the problem might be. That might mean having to face up to your drinking and there might be some shocks in doing so. However, in the long run it is much more beneficial to be honest with yourself rather than trying to cover things up.

Take an objective stance

Part of that process will necessarily involve trying to take an objective stance around your drinking. This can be tough to do, but it’s a good idea. Simply stepping back and looking objectively at how much you drink, how your relationship to it has changed over time and so on, is going to ensure that you have a much better sense of what might need to change – as well as how to change it.

If you are finding this hard, you might want to speak to some friends, relatives and other people close to you. They will probably have a more objective grasp and view on what is going on with your alcohol usage, and speaking with them and getting their honest opinion is going to help you out a great deal. You might be amazed at how much this helps you to get a grasp on your drinking and what it is really like – but once again, don’t expect it to be an altogether comfortable experience.

Look at your options for help

There are many kinds of help out there that you might be able to get, and it’s a good idea to try and be as aware as possible of the many kinds of help there are. Looking at your options and understanding them is hugely powerful and important.

You might wish to ask those close to you for help – although if they are your drinking buddies, you might not actually get the help you need from them. You might also want to speak to your doctor or a therapist, or it could even be time to attend alcohol rehab. Whatever you do, just make sure that you are aware of your options and that you look at what they are as soon as possible.

Replacing the drug with something healthy

If you want to try and drink less, you would do well to see it for what it is: a drug, and a potentially very addictive one at that. Overcoming it can be tough, therefore. But if you want to do so, you might want to consider replacing it with something a little healthier.

That can even be an alcohol-free beer, or it could be something else altogether like a piece of fruit. Just doing this occasionally can empower you to change your relationship to alcohol considerably, and with great results.

Try a dry month

If you just want to get a feel for an alcohol-free life, consider going dry for a month. For most people, this is enough of a challenge to discover some important truths, but not so difficult that they would find it impossible to overcome.

Of course, if you are fully addicted to alcohol, you may wish to speak with a doctor before attempting this. All in all, however, a dry month can help you to see where you are with your drinking habit, and work out whether you need to change something in your approach – which is really important.
