Our brain’s secret trick to memorizing has to do with rhythm

Pioneering research led by scientists from the Department of Neuroscience and the Institute of Neurosciences Del Monte at the University of Rochester reveals that our brains leverage rhythmic patterns of activity when tasked with memorization. Instead of continuously activating a specific brain region during a memory exercise, our brains opt to “turn on and off” the neurons in that area at regular intervals.

Ian Fiebelkorn, one of the study’s authors, explains, “The rhythmic coordination of brain activity over time is crucial because it allows overlapping populations of neurons to store different pieces of information simultaneously.”

Navigating Cognitive Harmony

The intricate details of the study were published in an article in the journal Current Biology. To unravel the mysteries of the brain’s rhythmic memory processes, participants in the experiment were asked to engage in a brief memory exercise while their brain activities were monitored through electroencephalography (EEG).

The researchers observed how the intensity of the “internal representations” of the images participants were exposed to fluctuated over time. These rhythmic fluctuations occurred on a scale finer than a second.

“This rhythmic brain process could also explain how we stay focused when juggling multiple tasks, such as trying to recall an address while driving a car,” adds Fiebelkorn. “Instead of focusing simultaneously on these tasks, we might be alternating between them on a sub-second timescale.”

From Theory to Application

While this neurological revelation might not propel us to exam success, its applications extend beyond academic concerns. Understanding the intricacies of our brains, especially our memory functions, can play a pivotal role in combating neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s.

Beyond the theoretical realm, research endeavors such as this pave the way for the development of neural implants designed to tackle memory-related issues. Significant strides have been made in this field, though practical, day-to-day applications remain a distant prospect.
