Large College Towns

The most populous cities in the state are also home to many opportunities to further your education. The below cities are among the largest not only in California but the United States as well offering nearly limitless opportunities and options.

  • Los Angeles: home to nearly four million people LA is one of the most famous cities in America and in addition to being the home of a wealth of entertainment and business it is also home to more colleges than can be listed here. Some of the most notable examples include USC, UCLA, Loyola Marymount, Occidental College, and several other highly regarded institutions of learning.
  • San Francisco: home to nearly a million people San Francisco offers urban living at its finest. With lots to see and do there are also educational opportunities. Some of the best colleges include USF, San Francisco Art Institute, San Francisco State University, and more.
  • San Diego: if you’re looking for nice weather, the beach, ocean, and lots to do San Diego is a good choice. Some of the city’s more notable colleges include the University of California, San Diego (UCSD), San Diego State University (SDSU), and the University of San Diego.

Smaller College Towns

Not everyone is cut out for the big city and that’s OK for some smaller towns are exactly what you’re looking for and luckily just because you live in a smaller town doesn’t mean you can’t get a good education or have a good time.

  • San Luis Obispo: a coastal town SLO is a great place if you like the great outdoors (the city is only 30 minutes away from the Montaña de Oro State Park) and still want to enjoy some culture and amenities. In terms of education, California Polytechnic State University and Cuesta College are two centers of learning that call San Luis Obispo home.
  • Claremont: located east of LA Claremont offers a quieter lifestyle without being too far from the big city. Claremont is also near Mount Baldy and the exciting nightlife of Southern California. Notable colleges include Harvey Mudd College, Claremont McKenna College, and Pomona College.
  • Arcata: in north California Arcata is home to roughly 18,000 residents and offers a different lifestyle than the big city, it is a great location if you like spending time in the woods and going on hikes. Arcata is also home to Humboldt State University.

Final Thoughts

California is a very diverse place with a lot to offer both as a student and a place to live. An advantage of this variety is there are cities and towns to fit every lifestyle. With California, you can easily find a place that fits what you’re looking for in your education and lifestyle.
