The Best Grammar Checker Tools for Writing

Are you having trouble with spelling, grammar, or just want to improve your writing? Here are some tools I’ve tried and recommended!

Here are the Five Best Grammar Checker Tools

Whether you are busy with your thesis, essay writing online, email, blog, or crafting your CV, grammar can be crucial for your content’s credibility. Many of us can rely on Microsoft Word to check the simplest errors.

But there is no guarantee that it would provide good writing where you can minimize your adverbs, replace weak adjectives, improper comma usage, check the difficulty of reading your text or even receive a readability score.

It is important to look professional on-page as it can maintain a positive image for your writing, whether you are a native or non-native speaker. Checking your grammar is crucial to avoid bad first impressions.

And for this reason, we wish to list several tools that could help you in your error-free writing.

Grammarly

If you wish to compose coherent, mistake-free writing with Grammarly’s AI-powered writing assistant, then I’d recommend them.

Grammarly is free to use with the possibility of upgrading to a paid account for more assistance for large content editing. You can give it a shot here:

They are not only one of the most popular tools for grammar, but also offer some excellent integrations for those working with WordPress and other online writing programs. One of the best parts about Grammarly is that it has a free Chrome extension that proofreads in your browser.

So if you do your projects, assignments, or essays for your next work or school task, Grammarly will work for you when you activate Gmail, Google Docs, and other social media accounts.

  1. Unlike most spellcheckers, Grammarly is widely used to look into more complicated fixes, like subject-verb agreement and comma splicing.
  2. You have the option to save and gain access to your past work from any computer.
  3. Grammarly stores your personal dictionary (your personal adjustments that need no attention) so that it corrects or ignores certain words that you use more commonly.
  4. The native apps work great so you don’t need to worry about bookmarking it or keeping another tab open.

The paid version of Grammarly not only offers help with grammar but punctuation, spell checks, plagiarism, and writing style. If you are a writer, journalist, teacher, or blogger, Grammarly is a must-have!

Scribens

Scribens offers exclusive options from grammar checking to dictionaries. It is a free-to-use grammar tool that claims to correct more than 250 different types of grammar, spelling, and stylistic errors outlined in different colors, depending on the type of error made.

Certain corrections are backed by explanations in order to help a writer progress his writing skills. For this reason, we thought Scribens is the first worthy grammar checker on this list as it is one of our personal favorites.

However, it offers other useful writing tools such as detecting repetitions, redundancies and provides conjugations and synonym suggestions. As we tested it, we found further benefits listed below that make it worth using.

  1. Detects repetitions, redundancies, and suggests synonyms
  2. Detailed stats on your texts
  3. Grammar rules explained behind every underlined error
  4. It can be an extension for Chrome, Firefox, even Word 2016 for Windows or Word Online

Ginger

ginger grammar checker

As they claim; this spell checker has no comparison in terms of accuracy. Ginger corrects your typos, phonetic mistakes, severe spelling mistakes, and misused words based on the context of a sentence. With just a single click, you can correct all of your spelling mistakes to make your content smooth.

For a start, you can go and install the Ginger Chrome extension. Afterward, once you use Ginger, your work is analyzed for grammatical, spelling, and context errors. You can even take advantage of Ginger’s offers in apps like Slack, Twitter, LinkedIn, and Gmail. The only downside we found was that it’s not entirely free.

The free version on Chrome only provides translations and definitions but does not give any additional services.

In order to activate Ginger’s grammar checking, sentence rephrasing, and analysis of mistakes, the premium version is required. This plan starts at $12.48 per month, but that’s only if you decide to pay annually. The standard monthly price is $20.97. So why is it worth it? We have listed a few points we thought it was worth taking it up on this list.

  1. Firstly, we were quite satisfied with friendly support and clean interface
  2. There is also a free Chrome extension for
  3. Translations and definitions.
  4. If we do the math, the annual payment isn’t too steep.
  5. Ginger proofreads as you type in a wide range of online apps, such as Gmail, WordPress, and Slack.
  6. If you wish to improve your English over time, Ginger offers a personal trainer feature for that.
  7. There is a text reader feature allowing you to listen to your content and see how it sounds.

LanguageTools

This one is also an amazing grammar checker worthy of this list. Although it is not entirely free, this is a great tool for those who wish to check their spelling, available in other languages apart from English.

However, despite being not entirely free, it is quite suitable for most users, considering you get most of the standard features. The only limit is the 20,000 characters per grammar check. So, you might find some of your longer articles being wearisome for LanguageTool technology.

Other than that, we really liked LanguageTools for its descriptions of each grammar or spelling correction. This explanation is automatically shown at the top of the suggestion box instead of forcing you to click on some sort of “explanation” button.

Grammarly Pricing

Regarding the price, the premium version gets you more grammar checking options and integration for Microsoft Word for a price of $19 per month. Of course, this price goes down if you pay for a one or three-year subscription in advance. However, we believe the free version is quite suitable for most users with its limited features.

  1. The free version is good enough to use with most grammar-checking tools included. The only limit is the character count.
  2. It is one of the most powerful options in terms of language support, is available in 27 languages.
  3. You can also install a Chrome extension to grammar check writing in Gmail and other apps for example.
  4. There are dozens of add-ons and native software options provided for things like Google Docs and Microsoft Word.

After the deadline

Let’s start with one of the best parts.

It is free!

After The Deadline is available as a Google Chrome extension. It comes with a built-in spell checker tool with optional grammar, correct word usage, and readability check. The cloud-based software uses intelligent open-source technology that detects errors and helps in providing smart suggestions.

Once you have installed the add-on in your browser, you will need to click on it and select options. This will open the add-on’s settings page where you can check the options that you want the add-on to look out for.

  1. Unlike a regular spellchecker, Language Tools looks into more complicated fixes, like subject-verb agreement and comma splicing.
  2. It can be used with the OpenOffice.org productivity suite. This lets users check their content for errors before submitting them to their superiors, professors, or teachers.
  3. It has a very high user satisfaction rating with a current 94% approval rating.

So there you have it. Hopefully, these will be helpful in your future attempts when trying to put your writing and research skills on paper. Best of luck if you have a task at hand.

Conclusion

Now that we went through all these great grammar checkers, we hope you’ll be able to max your writing! However, amongst all these options, my personal recommendation is to go with Grammarly, since it has a freemium plan that allows all basic editing. Furthermore, you can always outsource your work and enlist the help of some essay writing. But only if you’ve got the money to spare and time is not on your side (as your last resort.)

Apart from these software tools that help with grammar, there are multiple tools college students can use for their benefit to keep their of things and make life easier.
